Society has changed over the last years, in fact it has changed so much in the past 20 years; with that said race, drugs, and sexuality are still the main factors in modern times. Not only does this subject affect America, but also other countries, they are just silent about it. We really don’t hear about any misconduct toward gays in other countries, besides Russia. The gays want their rights in America and Russia, they are speaking out and they will be heard. Since Russia’s government strongly implements that being gay is wrong and will do anything to keep that mindset. America on the other hand is more towards equality for the LBGT, they’ve spoken out to demand the same rights as everyone else, slowly the LBGT in Russia are setting their foot down and want the freedom to walk the down the street with their loved ones and not be targeted. Strategic Impact of Porters Five Forces

Question: Discuss about the Strategic Impact of Porters Five Forces. Answer: Introduction: Porters five forces is a management tool, which can be utilized in order to analyze business environment. There are five dimensions of this management tools such as threat of new entrance, competitive rivalry, bargaining power of customers, bargaining power of suppliers and threat of substitute (Rothaermel 2015). In case of airline industry, the business investment for the new entrance is very high. However, Emirates Airline can minimize the threat of new entrants by emphasizing on the economies of scale, which will help the company to minimize the cost level. Moreover, market leaders are already capitalizing their brand image. Therefore, it can be said that the threat of new entrance of this industry is very low (Rothaermel 2015). Moreover, the companies are providing value added services like, restaurant facility within the airport area and the transportation facility from the airport to the nearest railway station or bus stop. Therefore, it can be said that competitive rivalry for Emirates Airline is high. As the market competition is high, it is easy for the consumers to switch brands. However, Emirates Airlines provide direct flight to San Francisco, which reduce the bargaining power of the customers remarkably (Redpath, O'Connell and Warnock-Smith 2016). Overall, consumers bargaining power is high in this industry. The suppliers can stop to supply the materials and switch to other companies if they find any discomfort in business deal with a particular company. There are many airline companies dealing with same suppliers. Therefore, the bargaining power of the suppliers is high as well. In this industry, both luxury and budget services are present (Klophaus 2016). The consumers can choose the service as p er their convenience. Therefore, it can be said that the threat of substitute products is high in this industry. The overall analysis of Emirates Airline shows that the market is highly competitive and therefore, it is highly important to provide value added services to the consumers. Eassay of To kill and elaphant Essay Example

Eassay of To kill and elaphant Essay Example Eassay of To kill and elaphant Essay Eassay of To kill and elaphant Essay Lowell begins the story with the discontent the police officer has with his job and India with its oppressors, keeping the conflict in the mind of the readers early on and constant. The narrator draws back on his memories which haunt him of when he had to make a choice and chose his pride. Lowell often writes about imperialism, in no shape or form hiding his distaste for it and often poking fun at it, such in 1984 and Animal Farm. He was born in India and moved to England for schooling and then ongoing the Imperial army after becoming unhappy with British treatment of the native Burmese, he left the police service. This often Influences his writings, drawing back on his personal first hand perspective of the land and the people. He struggles with in my opinion three things, one with the British Empire because of its unjust occupation of Burma, two with the Burmese because of their mockery of him, and three with himself In his struggle with his conscience and self-image. He detests his job and he believes that imperialism is terrible. Orwell sees the British rule as an unbreakable tyranny, as something clamped down Upon the will of prostate peoples. My question to this is though, is he talking solely of the British or is he talking also of the Burmese people. He talks of utter silence that Is Imposed on every Englishman in the East. to me it seems as though hes speaking as though Great Britain seems to think of its self as better than the rest and its imposing that rule into its people, that they must snub the countrymen and ignore all signs that point that maybe what theyre doing is wrong. This creates a wall between him and the people he so kindly believes In. Enable to share this with his own people and unable to have a relationship with the people of the country, he lives In a sort of mental isolation. Forced to keep his opinions and feelings to himself, he becomes lonely and a depression creeps over him and hes just waiting for the chance to get out of this Job, like many of us now. Also the selfish desire to be liked no matter the consequence is showed when he shoots the elephant; he knew how Important it was and how much the people added It even If they TLD. He shoots It anyways. HIS honesty towards his situation gained my trust and had me decide that he was a reliable narrator. He was brutal on both sides of the spectrum, talking of the nonsense that both countries have, and he spared no details on death the elephant caused lying on his belly with arms crucified and head sharply twisted to the side. and untimely the elephants very slowly and in great agony death. The only question I have with him is wither he really blames the British and Burmese for his struggle rather than confront himself ND see if maybe this could be inside his head, he seems to place all his judgment on them and see them as the reason of his anger not Just a side effect of It. It makes me wonder If things where as bad as he made them or not. His description of the elephant changes from the first time he mentions it to point 1 OFF choice that effects the rest of his life. The elephant becomes all the things he sees wrong with Great Britain and also all the things he loves about it. He reflects his inner conflict onto the situation. He does not want to shoot it. He never planned on it; the UN was a form of self-defense in the beginning. With the crowd gathering around him the people created a tension especially for one of the Queens lawmen he knows that the people are watching his every move and how itll reflect on his country, he needs to keep in pride in his opinion. They want him to kill it; its killed them and their homes. In his mind he also sees that but he also acknowledges that the elephant is the biggest source of work, it does the heavy farm work and without it there would be more work for the people. Exactly like Great Britain. Like the elephant, the empire is rueful. When the elephant raids the bazaar, he symbolizes the British Empire raiding the economy of Burma Thats not the only symbol he uses, he also uses the Burmese as a symbol of people losing themselves for power, l perceived in this moment that when the white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys. He becomes a sort of hollow, posing dummy, the conventionalism figure of a sahibs. For it is the condition of his rule that he shall spend his life in trying to impress the natives and so in every crisis he has got to do what the natives expect of him. He wears a mask, and his face grows to fit it. In the end he wants these peoples respect, honestly he Just wants anybody respect, and he wants to look needed and tough. He makes the mistake of not thinking it through or seeking advice from his fellow policemen or even a merchant or anyone that was following him. He puts this misbehaved amount of pressure on himself to shoot it, he honestly could have Just let it go, but the people wouldnt really like that so he automatically assumed thatd mean they would like him less. He shoots the elephant. Its a struggle; it takes more than one shot, each with its own memory imprinted on him and his choice. Each of us makes choices, we choose to follow the crowd or make a path for ourselves. No matter the consequence we do what we believe we need to do for ourselves or those we care for, Lowell tells this in his story he shows the truth in selfish desire. The choices we make may seem trivial at the time but each affects our lives, maybe it even sets the course of our lives.

The Best Formula For 10X Marketing Growth Is Here - CoSchedule

The Best Formula For 10X Marketing Growth Is Here The dream of content marketing is that it’s going to be a magical funnel that drips money into your bank account. Its lure is that it will create an inbound sales machine. But what should you do when it doesn’t work like that? Or even at all? That’s the question the 10x Marketing Formula  answers step-by-step. It’s a formula that will show you exactly what to do (and how to do it) to achieve tenfold marketing results. This means the return you can expect will be ten times over what you put in. It’s the exact formula we used to grow from zeroes across the board to: 1.3M+ monthly pageviews, 250k+ email subscribers, and thousands of customers in 100 countries in just 4 years. So don’t wait around reading a blog post†¦ Pick up a copy right now. The Best Formula For 10x Marketing Growth Is HereWhen you do, you’ll find out why Jay Baer calls it: â€Å"A powerful formula for marketing success; thoroughly modern and proven to succeed. This is a book for marketers that want to win.† You will learn to overcome  a lack of time, struggling to produce content, an inability to engage your audience, and so many more marketing roadblocks. If you think marketing success belongs only to elite geniuses or those with huge budgets, think again- 10x marketers achieve 10x growth regardless of their limitations. This book is about finding the strategic shortcuts to get you there fast. It’s about short-circuiting the path to jaw-dropping growth. You have to find your own way- and  10x Marketing Formula is that path. Michael Hyatt  says: â€Å"Garrett Moon is one of my favorites to follow because he combines the edge of a fearless startup CEO with the savvy of a marketer whos scaled a successful business. Ready to be a marketing genius and revolutionize your results? Read The 10X Marketing Formula fromWhat’s In The 10x Marketing Formula? This book’s title tips off the premise: we’re after 10x marketing results. This means the return we expect, and are resolved to achieve, is ten times over what we put in. We aren’t looking for 10 percent year-over-year growth; we’re laser-focused on blowing the roof off last year’s, last month’s, and last week’s numbers. To do this requires a mindset shift. You can’t expect 10x results from copying everyone else. What worked for someone else isn’t a guarantee to work for you. This means drafting a binder full of charts and best guesses and calling it a marketing plan is doomed to fail. It’s too crowded and the world moves too fast for â€Å"copycat marketing.† One of the surest paths to growth is by creating the kind of content that stands out and gets results. While the book is a comprehensive guide to building an entire marketing program, I want to share a sample of what brilliant content marketing looks like using just a few of the frameworks from  10x Marketing Formula. Check them out in the infographic below. Now that you have the recipe for content marketing success, lets talk about what the rest of the formula looks like. 10x Marketing Formula  presents four phases to marketing mastery: planning, execution, publishing, and analysis. It isn’t simply a variant of a marketing to-do list, it’s a set of frameworks that will work in any context- regardless of your limitations Marcus Sheridan, Author of They Ask, You Answer, says: â€Å"Often, books like this are a disappointment. Theyre long on ideas, short on actionability. This is not one of those books. Garrett Moon delivers on the promise of providing a blueprint for the most differentiating and results-driven content marketing of your career. Here’s an overview of the formula. Phase One: Plan In the first phase, you’ll learn how to create content so good, so powerful, and so effective it’ll make your competition look like they didn’t even try. Even better, your content will produce revenue by perfectly marrying your business value and customer needs. This happens with a framework I call the content core. You will also find an exclusive interview with Noah Kagan, Chief Sumo of Sumo Group, where we go deep on marketing for growth. Phase one is about dialing in your content to drive tons of traffic and increase conversions. Noah says about the book: If you think you have to be in Silicon Valley to grow a startup, think again. Garrett has done an impressive job from NORTH DAKOTA in growing a successful company. Enjoy seeing the exact marketing methodology he used to do it! Phase Two: Execute Is your team really producing all its capable of? Or is there more output and productivity yet to be realized? If so, phase two will turn the ship around immediately. It’s all about how to get shit done- especially as a marketing team. You will learn to brainstorm the best project ideas of your career, rapidly execute them, and dramatically increase your team’s output. From developing a content scorecard to publish the best content you’re capable of to a dead-simple way to create efficient workflows†¦ Phase two skyrockets productivity. It also includes exclusive interviews with Pat Flynn, Jeff Goins, and Brian Dean on creating the best damn content on the Internet. And how to lift the best principles from agile software methodologies for marketing teams with Andrea Fryrear. Phase two will dramatically elevate your team’s output, help you generate (and magically prioritize) 10x ideas, and focus relentlessly on your most important growth metrics. Here’s what Jeff Goins, Best-Selling Author of The Art of Work  and Real Artists Don’t Starve, had to say: â€Å"The 10x Marketing Formula is fantastic. No fluff or theory. Real-life practical experience based on what really works. I’m a fan of , and I love what Garrett Moon has put together here. It’s a must-read for anyone who wants their content to spread.† And Brian Dean, founder of Backlinko, says: â€Å"Want a guide to creating effective content thats overflowing with actionable tips? Look no further than The 10x Marketing Formula. Unlike most books in this space, its written by a guy thats actually done it. Highly recommended. Phase Three: Publish Ann Handley, WSJ Bestselling Author of Everybody Writes  and Chief Content Officer of MarketingProfs, says the book is, A clear-eyed, real-world, no-bunk look at what it takes to make your content marketing program deliver in spades. And phase three is where your content marketing will flourish. It’s time to overhaul your social promotion strategy, build a massive email list, and operate as a lean, hyper-efficient marketing machine. You’ll also get fresh insights from Ash Maurya and John T. Meyer in more exclusive interviews. Ash, author and creator of Lean Canvas, kindly says of the book: â€Å"Garrett Moon combines the edge of a fearless startup CEO with the savvy of a marketer whos scaled a successful business. The 10x Marketing Formula delivers all that and more while showing you how to do the same. In phase three, you will learn to ship the most impactful projects and then promote them with frameworks for social media and email. Premier Facebook Marketing Expert Social Media Thought Leader Mari Smith  says, Most marketers today struggle to get measurable reach, engagement, traffic and sales from their marketing efforts. Savvy marketers know it takes a fresh new approach to get real results. Garrett Moon is one of those savvy marketers! In his new book, The 10x Marketing Formula, he shares the exact steps to creating memorable content marketing that actually grows your business. Read, apply and watch your results soar! Phase Four: Analyze Joanna Wiebe  is the OG conversion copywriter and the cofounder of Copy Hackers and Airstory. When it comes to why people click, try, and buy, she knows what’s up. That’s why I interviewed her about conversion psychology in phase four, where it’s all about analyzing and optimizing your results. Joanna says: â€Å"Growth no longer goes to the biggest. It goes to the scrappiest. It goes to the content hackers who find strategic shortcuts. Whos gonna own the future? The marketing teams who embrace this blueprint and learn to think like the agile, lean teams outlined in this book. You see, 10x marketing results is about way more than the right tools or tactics. It’s about driving growth with incredible focus (using the â€Å"One Metric That Matters† framework) and learning to write irresistible CTAs and CTVs (calls-to-value). Why I want to be an officer in the US army Essay

Why I want to be an officer in the US army - Essay Example The US Army is founded upon seven principles i.e. Personal Courage, Integrity, Honor, Selfless Service, Respect, Duty and Loyalty. (US Army Manuals, 2008)Soldiers are taught about these values during training and they soon form part of their lives as they carry out their duties. Because I share in the desire to acquire and live according to these values, then I believe that the US Army would be the right place for me. In the civilian world, many people are familiar with all the latter values; however, very few of them actually embrace them as part of their lives. Most of them may consider these values as theoretical ones and rarely do they adhere to all of them. However, US Army officers are different in this regard. This is because the seven Army values are part of what they are. All US Army officers are expected to bear allegiance to the Army, the US constitution and to their fellow soldiers. Loyalty as an army value is first and foremost directed to the country and its heritage. In theory, this may seem like a relatively easy thing to do. However, there is much that has to be considered in the execution of this value. For instance, when soldiers are out in combat and they are heading towards a location that they may not be sure of, it is essential for these officers to demonstrate their loyalty to the Army by obeying the directions of their Captain. This should be the case regardless of objections that other soldiers may have against the Captain's opinion. (US Army, 2008) In order to be loyal, it is necessary for one to actually bear witness to the US Army ideals. This normally means that one has to be willing to devote oneself to the Army and to other persons in the Army. This is usually displayed by a deep respect and support for one's leaders and colleagues. Every Army soldier can contribute towards the greater good of the institution by carrying out their part. There is only one thing that can prepare an individual to engage or participate in something that poses a serious risk of death. This is having great loyalty to ones country. Such officers usually pledge allegiance to their country and their constitution even when it might cause them great harm or even loss of their lives. To me, there is nothing that can show one's loyalty to their country like sacrificing one's own life for it. While it may be a fact that not all US Army officers are at risk of loss of life, one cannot ignore the fact that it can happen. Consequently, one ought to be ready for this. Source; http://www.cbc.ca/ A memorial for fallen soldiers in the war in Iraq; the latter illustration shows some of the prices that the US has to pay to defend their deals. It may be a scary thing for many people to work in the army because many are wary of its unpredictability. In fact, this is the sole reason why so many people opt not to join the Army. However, the same situation does not apply to me. I have a deep respect and love for my country. My loyalty is so immense to the point that I can be willing to put up with so much just so that I can secure a better life for my generation. Many great leaders in history had to make sacrifices because if they had not chosen to do so, then our nation would not be as it is today. The ideals that hold America today must be protected at all costs and if it takes some injuries or a life to prove this point, then so be it. The US Army is the best place to serve when one has such utmost respect and loyalty for their

Christian View of Business and its Purpose in Society Personal Statement

Christian View of Business and its Purpose in Society - Personal Statement Example The paper also identifies if trade action needs to be involved exclusively by means of antagonistic visionary means which would be enthusiastically embraced (Duzer, 2012). One of the most appealing aspects stated by the authors has been related to the definition of business and its relation with the theological perspective. The article asserts that business is a form of institution since it is a means through which a group chooses to resolve one of its social problems. From the views of theology, the main objective of business is to assist in the creation of God’s empire. The unique role that the business has to play in that effort is to serve the society by manufacturing the goods and the services required to facilitate the pursuance of the main objective and the creation of the giftedness of the person in the business. The article tends to lay theological framework for comprehending business in terms of God’s creativity, human depravity as well as Christ’s rede mption. The article is well written and is also quite significant and thus contributes meaningfully to the understanding of the readers and inspires in accomplishment of their daily work within the noble calling of business. It can be reflected that the redemption view of business leads an individual to the particular situation that is valued by the Christians. The authors state the fact that instead of just restricting the acceptable business conduct, it forces the individuals to enter into business as a type of service offered to the neighbor and finally the individual’s participation in creating the sovereignty of God. The individual is capable of freely entrusting upon the Spirit of God in order to give wisdom, competence, creativity as well as compassion for their involvement in business since the people tend to fulfill the redemption purpose of God. In the absence of the solid theology, the Christians in business do not have a proper sense of purpose and a comprehension of the spiritual environment in which they tend to function. When the way of doing business lacks moral, then its sole objective of attaining the organizational goals might be eradicated and hence the focus is generally upon the accomplishment of the personal goals. Therefore, it is quite significant to inculcate theology with the help of which the business man will be competent of operating morally and thus will also be capable of conducting business in an ethical way. The focus of the businessman must not solely be on maximizing the profitability factor but also on serving the society according to the directions demonstrated by god (Duzer, Franz, Karns, Dearborn, Daniels, & Wong, n.d.). Article 2: The Social Responsibility of Business is to make its Profits The article â€Å"The Social responsibility of Business is to make its Profits† has been written by Milton Friedman. The key intention of the article is to demonstrate the fact that the main objective of social responsi bility is to enhance the profitability factor of business. The author in his article describes the social responsibility of not the businesses but of the corporate executives, which is his main thesis statement. Friedman has argued that the supporters of the social responsibility of business were generally moralizing socialism. However, in the present times, the debate is generally regarding the characteristic of capitalism. The most relevant point that has been noticed in the article is that the corporation is an

Theatre review Essay Example for Free

Theatre review Essay The lighting for most of the play was moderately bright with foot lights lighting the stage, and several overhead lights as well. The exception was Petruchios house, which was quite dim to show how different it was from what Kate was used to, and showing how miserable she was. Most scenes were broadly lit instead of using spotlights to highlight individual characters, which I was quite surprised about, One exception was outside the tavern where the men were celebrating Biancas engagement, when a spotlight was used to show the merchant pretending to be Lucentios father looking out from a window. Lighting was s also used for several special effects. One example was the storm outside Petruchios house, which was very effective, and also an amazing contrast compared to the scene with Bianca in the garden, which had a completely different mood that was well conveyed by the lighting used in both scenes. Sound effects were also used to convey the emotions in each scene, though not used abundantly, but were key to the scene, for example, wedding bells for the church scene and thunder and lightening, which was very atmospheric. There was music from the orchestra before the play started, which set the mood, and also put the play in context because it was sort of old fashioned instrumentalist music, which showed that the play was going to be the traditional version instead of a more contemporary updated version. There was also background music sometimes, but nothing too obvious, and only a few bars at a time, with no real impact on the scene except to add to the surroundings, rather than narrate them, so they didnt have any particular tone, i. e. hopeful or sad. The lack of songs seemed strange to me because Ive only previously been used to seeing musicals performed but the cast conveyed the emotions adequately anyway. The costumes in the play were also of a very high quality, even though each character only had one outfit. Nevertheless they showed a lot about the personalities of each role. For example, Bianca wore a pretty yellow dress to show how girly she was, and that she cared about her appearance while Kat wore a rough looking one. Gremios clothes were probably the most affluent, with robes that were trimmed of fur and a lot of gold jewellery, which supported the fact that he was the richest of Biancas suitors, Gremio retired to his moneybags Things like this showed aspects of their personalities. I could tell that clothes were important in those times because they showed who a person was. A case that shows this is when Lucentio swaps clothes with his servant. , so that anyone who saw them would know instantly which one was the master. Ive seen things like this in other performances, for example Les Miserables and often other pre 1900 plays.

database design :: essays research papers

Database Design Scenario Currently a school uses a non-computerised database system to store the following information about its students: roll class, surname, first name, guardian's name, address, student's date of birth, gender, sport house, emergency-contact telephone number, mailing name, list of subjects offered, and subjects in which the student is enrolled. The system takes up a large amount of space, has many duplicated entries some of these with mistakes and it is time consuming to search. The school intends to introduce a relational-database management system to overcome these problems. Current school data storage and retrieval system (the pre-computer database system) „h School staff, teachers and office staff are the users of the database. „h Database used to track all details of students in the school. „h Large amounts of data are stored. An individual record is required for each student. „h Lots of duplication exists as details of subjects offered by the school are duplicated on individual student records. „h Data is organised in alphabetical order on student names within years. „h Data is stored in a number of filing cabinets. Advantages „h quick to find details of a student if year and surname are known „h data is stored in a central secure location „h original source material is stored in the student file. Disadvantages „h slow to find details of students when surname and year are not known „h data storage takes up a lot of room „h minimal number of staff can access records at one time „h data is duplicated. Stages of development of the computerised relational database system The new computerised relational database system will be developed in the following stages: „h analysis „h design „h implementation „h maintenance Analysis In this stage the current system is analysed to determine the functions it performs and those that it is unable to perform. Direct and indirect users of the new system are interviewed to determine what they require from the new system. The inputs to the new system, the processes it is to perform and the outputs from the system are clearly defined. A recommendation is made about the type of new system that will be required to meet the identified needs. During the analysis stage, the following is determined: „h current storage space of student records needs to decrease „h an easily update-able backup of student records is required, „h one staff member is to be responsible for the administration of the system, „h unnecessary duplication of data is to be avoided, „h all teaching staff, office staff and the Principal need to have access to the database simultaneously - read access only is required

Millenium Development Goals Essay

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) emerged from the United Nations (UN) Millennium Declaration in 2000, and are arguably the most politically important pact ever made for international development. They identify speciï ¬ c development priorities across a very broad range, including poverty, education, gender, health, environment, and international partnerships. These goals have substantially shaped development dialogue and investment; some development agencies judge all their activities on the contribution to achievement of the MDGs. Overall, progress towards the MDGs has been described as â€Å"patchy† and â€Å"uneven†. The broad conclusion is that few goals are entirely on track globally, and those that are show substantial variation, with least progress in Africa and often south Asia. The MDGs comprise a set of eight goals and associated targets and indicators. They represent the latest eï ¬â‚¬ort in a long process of development goal setting which had antecedents in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Development Decade of the 1960s, and the many UN summits of the second half of the 20th century that set speciï ¬ c goals to reduce hunger, improve health, eradicate diseases, and school children. The Millennium Declaration presented six values that were considered to be fundamental to international relations in the 21st century: freedom, equality, solidarity, tolerance, respect for nature, and shared responsibility. Seven key objectives were identiï ¬ ed to translate these shared values into actions: peace, security, and disarmament; development and poverty eradication; protection of our common environment; human rights, democracy, and good governance; protection of vulnerable people; meeting of the special needs of Africa; and strengthening of the UN. The performance of individual MDGs so far suggests that they have made four important positive contributions: encouraging global political consensus, providing a focus for advocacy, improving the targeting and ï ¬â€š ow of aid, and improving the monitoring of development projects. The MDGs are claimed to be â€Å"the ï ¬ rst global development vision that combines a global political endorsement with a clear focus on, and means to engage directly with, the world’s poor people†. There are many challenges posed by the Millenium Development Goals. Set against these positive contributions are several shortcomings that emerge consistently across the analysis of individual MDGs. Characteristically, most of these weaknesses present themselves as the ï ¬â€šip side of the MDGs’ more positive elements. Thus, the Millenium Development Goals, which has probably facilitated their acceptance and use, makes them at the same time limited in scope, whereas their quantitative targets and precise indicators often fail to capture some crucial elements of goal achievement. We have to accept that all goal setting involves such trade-offs. However, the value of focusing on shortcomings of the MDGs lies in our potential to improve them, or replace them with something better. Ineï ¬â‚¬ective MDGs pose two risks: they might not achieve their intended eï ¬â‚¬ect, and they could lead to negative eï ¬â‚¬ects by ignoring or impeding more eï ¬â‚¬ective development and poverty reduction. There are many problems with the goals set by UN. The MDGs represent a subset of a broader development vision expressed in the Millennium Declaration. Goals were never developed for several key objectives of the Declaration, including peace, security and disarmament, and human rights. The elements taken into the MDGs were in fact the speciï ¬ c targets associated with only one objective of the Declaration, that of development and poverty eradication. Some of these goals, being themselves derived from speciï ¬ c targets, were very narrow in conception: education goals focused mainly on primary education, whereas health goals focused only on three aspects of health associated with maternal mortality, child mortality, and speciï ¬ c diseases.

Kraft’s Acquisition of Cadbury Essay

The Kraft Foods Group Inc. (â€Å"Kraft†) operates in the food and beverage industry. Kraft is the U.S.’s #1 food company and #2 in the world (after Nestlà ©) in sales according to Hoover’s 2009. Their competitive advantages are: global scale [distribution around 150 countries, (LexisNexis, 2012)]; modern technology, equipment and R&D (â€Å"Kraft deploys SAP Tech. platform†, 2008); their partnerships with companies like AOL TWX, Rainforest Alliance, etc. (â€Å"Kraft Foods partners with Rainforest Alliance on sustainable coffee initiative†, 2009); and their supply chain (www.pincsolutions.com/kraft-foods, 2012). These advantages can attribute Kraft’s Net Profit Margin of 10.08%, compared to the industry’s average of 5.37% (Hoover’s, 2012). On the other hand, Cadbury is a confectionery and is the industry’s second-largest globally after Mars (Gray, 2009) and the company operates in approx. 50 countries worldwide. Their capabilities, brand popularity and innovation represent their main competitive advantages (â€Å"Using Open Innovation to Ensure Competitive Advantage†, 2010). With the acquisition, Cadbury will benefit from Kraft’s scale (Birchall & Wiggins, 2009), their distribution in emerging markets (Elms, â€Å"Kraft and Cadbury) and their marketing muscle (English, 2009), which will result in a faster growth for Cadbury. Kraft will benefit by diversifying even more on related business (they already own Toblerone, Nutter Butter, etc,) and also from Cadbury’s capabilities (brand, innovation, know-how, etc.) that will likely represent as an additional source of value creation for Kraft. Together the companies will surely impair the competition: for example the termination of Hershey’s license to make and sell the Cadbury brands in the U.S. (30% of total sales, Hoover’s, 2008). Currently Kraft if facing two major issues, and they are: – The acquisition only makes sense if Kraft can obtain a return on investment capital bigger than the cost of capital within a reasonable timeframe. – The competition with Nestle, Hershey and Mars. The recommendations are the following: Kraft should boost the growth and profitability of Cadbury by exploiting their scale, marketing potential, placing in emerging markets and partnerships, as they did with Post cereals in 2008 (Hoover’s, 2009). Additionally on the functional level, Cadbury’s legal department should terminate Hershey’s license to sell and distribute their products in the U.S. and transfer this licenses to Kraft. Kraft should also take advantage of the Cadbury acquisition (diversifying on related business) and this should result in the creation of additional value for Kraft, resulting in a competitive advantage vs. competitors (Nestlà ©, Mars, etc.). A â€Å"tapered† integration of Cadbury is reasonable: selling the distribution rights to competitors in the markets where Kraft is not present (43 countries); at the same time Kraft should exploit the exclusive distribution and fabrication rights for Cadbury’s products where they are present.

Writing for International Markets

Writing for International Markets Make your freelance writing career go viral. To make more money in 2014, take your marketing outside of North America. Introduce your work to a global audience. The Internet and social media have made this task easy, but its still your responsibility to be pro-active. Like hanging out on Facebook, the epitome of social media? Facebook can lead you to international markets. Using hashtags, you can find a publication with similar content to your post. For example, if youre writing about high school proms, you can write about the increasing cost of prom dresses, underaged sex or alcohol. When working with editors from overseas, keep in mind five types of stories most likely to be accepted: 1. Celebrity profiles. Overseas, the American entertainment industry still creates the most revenue. If youve written profiles of American celebrities and business leaders, and you still own rights, sell them to overseas publications as reprints. Even if you sold all rights to one article, most of the time you can still write and publish articles on similar topics. 2. Travel articles. If youre a native New Yorker, editors from London to Mumbai eagerly want to read your views of Central Park, the Brooklyn neighborhood of Williamsburg and the Bronx Zoo. Ditto for residents of Orlando or Vail, Colorado. Even if your towns small and relatively nondescript, use your imagination to transform a local event or destination into a beautiful word picture for foreign vacationers or local staycationers. 3. Write about the demographic of your magazine. This is almost impossible for writers not familar with the magazines location. The majority of editors prefer local writers to write about their culture. However, if you know some Indian-Americans, for example, and you want to write about how domestic violence or mental illness affects the Indian-American community in your city, you can pitch to an Indian magazine. 4. Write about American trends. To most of the world, Americas still a leader in finance, culture and science. Many international publications want stories on how trends in the United States affect their particular country. An Australian magazine may want a piece on how their local retail sector reacted to the financial safety breach at Target. A trade magazine from South Africa may want a how-to on encouraging customers to start using credit and debit cards again after similar scandals. If its just a straightforward trend article, editors prefer local writers, so stand out 5. Essays. Another way to crack international markets is through personal essays, especially based on experiences located in the magazines country. Essays can be humorous, political or foster cross-cultural understanding. In this case, always read the magazine before submitting your unsolicited manuscript even if the magazine only comes through snail mail. Stereotypes are not only offensive, theyre a waste of time and cost you money. How to Write a Learning Contract and Realize Your Goals

How to Write a Learning Contract and Realize Your Goals We often know what we want, but not how to get it. Writing a learning contract with ourselves can help us create a roadmap that compares our current abilities with desired abilities and determine the best strategy for bridging the gap. In a learning contract, youll identify learning objectives, available resources, obstacles and solutions, deadlines, and measurements. How to Write a Learning Contract Determine the abilities required in your desired position. Consider conducting information interviews with someone in the job you seek  and ask questions about exactly what you need to know. Your local librarian can also help you with this. What are you going back to school to learn? What job do you want? What knowledge, skills, and abilities do you need to have in order to get the job you desire?Determine your current abilities based on prior learning and experience. Make a list of the knowledge, skills, and abilities you already have from prior school and work experience. It can be helpful to ask people who know you or have worked with you. We often overlook talents in ourselves that are easily noticed by others.Compare your two lists and make a third list of the skills you need and dont yet have. This is called gap analysis. What knowledge, skills, and abilities will you need for your dream job that you havent yet developed? This list will help you determine the appropriate school for you and the classes youll need to take. Write objectives for learning the skills you listed in Step 3. Learning objectives are very similar to SMART goals. SMART goals are:Specific (Give a detailed description.)Measurable (How will you know youve achieved it?)Achievable (Is your objective reasonable?)Results-oriented (Phrase with the end result in mind.)Time-phased (Include a deadline.) Example:Learning objective: To speak conversational Italian fluently enough before traveling to Italy on (date) that I can travel without speaking English. Identify available resources for reaching your objectives. How will you go about learning the skills on your list?Is there a local school that teaches your subjects? Are there online courses you can take? What books are available to you?Are there study groups you can join?Who will help you if you get stuck? Is there a library accessible to you?Do you have the computer technology you need?Do you have the finances you need?Create a strategy for using those resources to meet your objectives. Once you know the resources available to you, choose the ones that match the way you learn best. Know your learning style. Some people learn better in a classroom setting, and others prefer the solitary study of learning online. Choose the strategy that will be most likely to help you succeed.Identify potential obstacles. What problems might you encounter as you begin your study? Anticipating problems will help you be ready to overcome them, and you wont be thrown off course by a nasty surprise. Think of everything that might become an obstacle and write it down. Your computer could break. Your daycare arrangements could fall through. You might get sick. What if you dont get along with your teacher? What will you do if you dont understand the lessons? Your spouse or partner complains youre never available. Identify solutions to each obstacle. Decide what you will do if any of the obstacles on your list actually happen. Having a plan for potential problems frees your mind of worry and allows you to focus on your studies.Specify a deadline for meeting your objectives. Each objective may have a different deadline, depending on whats involved. Choose a date that is realistic, write it down, and work your strategy. Objectives that dont have a deadline have a tendency to go on and on forever. Work toward a specific goal with a desired end in mind.Determine how you will measure your success. How will you know if youve succeeded or not? Will you pass a test? Will you be able to perform a specific task in a certain manner? Will a particular person evaluate you and judge your competency?Review your first draft with several friends or teachers. Go back to the people you consulted in Step 2 and ask them to review your contract. You alone are responsible for whether or not you succeed, but there are l ots of people available to help you. Part of being a student is accepting what you dont know and seeking help in learning it. You might ask them if:Your objectives are realistic given your personality and study habitsThey know of other resources available to youThey can think of any other obstacles or solutionsThey have any comments or suggestions regarding your strategy Make the suggested changes and begin. Edit your learning contract based on the feedback you receive, and then begin your journey. Youve got a map drawn specifically for you and designed with your success in mind. You can do this. Tips When youre thinking of the people in your life you might be able to ask for input, consider the ones who will tell you the truth, not the ones who will tell you what you want to hear or say only nice things. Your success is at stake. You need to know the good things  and the bad. Ask the people who will be honest with you.Online forums are great places to talk with other people who share your goals. Participate by posting your questions, responding to other peoples questions, and getting to know people who are interested in the same things you are.

Prison Gangs and Security Threat Groups Research Paper

Prison Gangs and Security Threat Groups - Research Paper Example The research paper "Prison Gangs and Security Threat Groups" establishes the connection between gangs and immigration pointing out how many gangs are non-American in origin and argues that the policy of keeping illegal immigrants in jail has had tremendous social ramifications, one of which is the creation and flourishing of prison gangs. Prison gangs and security threat groups are made up of immigrants – particularly those coming from Latin American countries like Mexico, Puerto Rico and Colombia. A good example from the Florida Bureau of Corrections information website is the Neta, whose membership is made up of Hispanics, primarily those of Puerto Rican descent. They are involved in the drug trade and are often engaged to perform acts of violence, also known as â€Å"hits†. Another example is the Black Guerrilla family, which is made up of blacks and actually is the most political of the gangs, with an anti-racism agenda and a Marxist-Maoist-Leninist ideology. From Mexico, one has the La Nuestra Familia and the Mexican Mafia. The La Nuestra Familia is made up of rural Mexicans, while the Mexican Mafia is made up of urban Mexicans. Both have a deep hatred for each other. In fact, it is said that the Nuestra Familia was formed to protect against the Mexican Mafia. All of these gangs have similar charact eristics: violent methods, a clear hierarchy and structure, and recruitment within the jails. But perhaps the inspiration for these gangs and the most well-known security threat group is none other than the Italian mafia.

Skills and Competitiveness Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4250 words

Skills and Competitiveness - Essay Example Advancement in technology has placed an even greater demand for skills. This is because the rate of technical change leads to higher levels of uncertainty for organizations which results in greater demand for problem solving skills   (Streeck, 1989). Countries such as the U.K are facing pressure from emerging countries such as India and China owing to their high growth rates and supply of high skills. Also, the demand for a highly skilled workforce has increased in the midst of intense global competition which has forced companies the developed nations to engage in ‘diversified quality production’ (Streeck, 1989).   On the contrary, critical studies have downplayed the importance of skills in securing innovation. In fact, the recent trend towards innovation may require â€Å"de-skilling† or reduction in the content of skills (Toner, 2011). According to these authors, the reliance on skill development through training has been reduced. This is attributed mostly to developments in the labor market such as self-employment and casualisation which require non-standard nature of work   (Toner, 2011). Furthermore, labor migration and labor mobility have further increased the power of workers and have reduced the incentives for firms to invest in developing skills of workers. Furthermore, the increased female participation in labor also acts as disincentive to train female employees with skills that they know will no longer benefit the organization once the females quit work (owing to family responsibilities or maternity leaves).

Magazine Content Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Magazine Content Analysis - Essay Example Some magazines target the minority while others target the majority. Indeed, we have minority-targeted magazine like the Black Enterprise magazine and mainstream-targeted magazines like BusinessWeek magazine. This paper presents a content analysis of minority and mainstream magazines. In doing so, the paper will explain how advertisement in minority-targeted magazines and mainstream-targeted magazine by establishing the similarities and differences there in. Ideally, advertising produces magazines that target diverse audience. In the recent times, the number of minority-targeted magazines have been increasing subject to the appreciation, increase, and buying power of the minority. Indeed, advertisers have realized the potential in the minority and have since tailored different advertisements targeting their needs, perception, and potential. The frequency and quantity of minority-targeted magazines have led to an intrusive and consistent mode of advertising that the minority cannot afford to disregard. Some of the minority-targeted magazines include the Black Enterprise magazine, African American Golfers Digest, Black Collegian Magazine, and Black Men Magazine. With respect to the Black Enterprise magazine, we can establish that the magazine is more prominent in black neighborhoods. The magazine has a capacity to reach about 6 million people and hence the need to analyze the content of the adverts contained in the magazine. Bay Of Pigs Historiography March 1960 marked the future of international relations between the United States and Cuba. The epic battle at the Bay of Pigs defined irrationalities between the two nations. U.S. President of the time, Dwight D. Eisenhower, ordered the central intelligence agency, otherwise known as the CIA, to use their special activities division to train, equip, and lead Cuban exiles in an invasion of Cuba. This was elaborately planned to overthrow the new communist government led by Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz. Eisenhower justified his cooperation for his opposing position stating it was the policy of the United States to aid the anti-Castro guerrilla forces. The original CIA plan called for a ship-borne invasion at the old colonial city of Trinidad, Cuba. Trinidad had good port facilities, and arguably was close to much existing counter-revolutionary activities. The CIA later proposed alternative plans, and on March 11, 1961 President Kennedy and his cabinet selected the Bay of Pigs option. Dur ing the invasion Kennedy decided not to send the air support to Cuba, for it would cause Soviet Russia to believe the United States was only a vicious world leader, giving them liable reason to attack America. However troops did not respond well to Kennedys decision since Castro took that moment to capture U.S. Military officials. The catastrophe was solely blamed on the president at the time. Like several times in history, the United States claimed it was their duty to set democratic policies in the small but important country; spreading a peaceful and efficient government gave people equal rights and laws all the while separating the elite government officials from the common population. Furthermore Castro would be unable to harm the people of Cuba if he were no longer in power, thus decreasing the illegal immigration from Cuba to America. As far as the United States was concerned it was necessary for the invasion to set some standards of living in the troubled country. However like all wars or arguments there is an opposing side and Cuba was not concerned with the same matter. Castro was furious his own people were invading their homeland. Unfortunately because he was the highest authority at the time, he initially ordered those few individuals to be exiled. The people of Cuba wanted freedom and support from a government that was anything but just. The communist country made no attempts to help its people , when concerned with gaining higher power. Castro was looked down upon as a dictator of the time despite his disapproval of dictatorships. The Cuban government order of battle is unclear and subject to dispute, although most sources generally credit Fidel Castro with centrally directing the overall strategy from Havana. Today the Bay of Pigs invasion is once again looked through two different perspectives. The United States is content in believing their decision to invade was correct and history has obviously repeated itself with the recent war in Irag and the decision to invade Pakistan. However there are several controversial theories claiming President Kennedy did not in fact order the cease of the air support. Many historians believe the CIA went against official government orders and took it upon themselves to delay the message to aircraft transporters. John F. Kennedy may simply be the innocent by-standard that issued a command that small, tangent groups refused to follow. The argument once again has an opposition, and Castro-followers believe Kennedy and Castro might have been in a secret society together; somewhat of a masonic cult of their own. Conspiracies continue to arise throughout our modern historical perspectives yet our history cannot be rerecorded. Of course relations between the United States and Cuba only became worse with the Cuban Missile Crisis and extend to sour interactions into present day history. Today Cuba and America are far from cooperating neighbors and the battle continues. Until Castros recent exit from the Cuban government office in 2008 and the reelection of the United States President, both nations have constantly vowed to fight until the end. We ceased trade with Cuba while they released all of their fugitive prisoners to contribute to the illegal immigration overload in America. They have waged vengeance upon each other like angry siblings without parental supervision. Even as a leading world power the American government has done little to compromise and solve the international affairs. With the hope of a new government in control of both countries, the history is at chance to change for the better and one day prosper as an ally.

Rowing :: essays research papers

Rowing, the Best Team Sport   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Rowing, the thrilling team sport that gets you physically/mentally fit and provides you a second family with many friends. In the sport of crew, teamwork is very crucial. With that teamwork comes new friends and wonderful coaches. Even though you might think this is a physical sport it is also considered to be a mental sport. Just think, baseball has nine innings, approximately two hours of play and a lot can change in that period of time for a loss or win. With crew you only have about seven minutes to get your eight man boat down a two thousand-meter racecourse to receive a medal or win. If you have the lead it is mentally hard to come back and win for the rowers behind the top three boats. Aside of the teamwork going on is the individual effort that you yourself is contributing to the boat. As you are out on the water in the eight man boat you always need to give it your all even if it means pain. In fact, our coach just tells us to eat pain. As you are giving 100% and in pain, your brain is working 100% too. Handle height, legs down quick and hands down and away quick along with the part of feathering the blade. Those are the things you focus on during a race. Oh yeah you also have a cool little person screaming at you to pull harder. They are known as the coxswain (Cox-in). When the coach isn’t there listen to them because they are the assistant coaches. All this is the first stride you take to get that gold medal. Come on you can do one more push up! When you’re in the gym you do not have the support of teammates. At crew you will not give up because of the support you have from your teammates behind you. In the gym you can just say, â€Å"Oh that set can be done another day,† and give up. We have in crew on Tuesday and Thursday a 2k-meter ergometer (erg) test to see who will be in an 8A boat, that is our eight fastest men of our crew. These are the days that you need your friends behind you pushing you so your time comes true that the couch gives you. I know this might seem harsh but when it is all over with you feel very great about the way you look and how you just pulled on the 2k test.

Nanotechnology Use in Fire Protection †Need for Environmental Friendliness Essay

There is a serious need to develop a more effective fire protection technology as the morbidities and the mortalities from the current seem to be rather insufficient. However, the nanotechnology fire protection industry is still in the infancy stage, developing solutions that are out of reach of the common man today. Nanotechnology is not only found to increase the durability, strength and efficiency of the material, but also increase it fire resistance along with self-cleansing action. A great number of fire-retarders have nanotechnology incorporated. A checklist needs to be prepared that would be required by the end user to ensure adequate protection of human life and the environment. Nanotechnology can also help in the detection and prevention of fires. The technology seems to be promising with various applications. However, only if the stakeholders become more interested would this technology become cheaper and permit more extensive use. Introduction Due to the serious impact of fire on the mortality, morbidity (burns, etc) and the losses to property, there is an urgent need for fire protection considering the overcrowding in cities and the serious impact of fires on the environment. In the year 2003, about 70 billion Euros were lost over fire damages, and hence, people are trying to build fire resistant buildings with both active and passive features (Innovations Report, 2004). Nanotechnology currently has a very small market segment as more and more fire-resistant materials and electronics are being used to tackle fire problems. In the Beijing Olympics concluded in the year 2008, fire protection was adequately provided in various sports construction sites by the use of Nanotechnology. There are more than 48 different applications in fire protection with nanotechnology. Some of the common applications required in fire protection include smoke detectors, alarm systems, resistant building material, etc, and nanotechnology has held strong promises in curbing some of the problems of the future (Innovations Report, 2004). In the year 2004, the nanotechnology market in the fire segment was 30 billion dollars, and is expected to almost double within a decade of introduction. As molecules can appropriately be modified to make them more fire-resistant, companies around the world are increasingly creating these modifications. Each year the nanotechnology market grows by about 25%. Nanotechnology is also said to be environmentally-friendly. China is said to be the current leader in the use of nanotechnology in fire protection (Innovations Report, 2004). The EPA is also supporting research in the use of nanotechnology for fire protection and safety. In February 2007, the EPA published a White paper on Nanotechnology and considered the same to help in preventing pollution to the environment. The White paper also focused on responsible use of nanotechnology by using recycling of the same and also ensures that the same was not toxic to the populations (EPA, 2007). Using nanotechnology has several advantages in reducing pollution & ill-effects on the environment:- 1. Reducing any waste substances that are released into the environment, 2. Using substances that are not so toxic, 3. Using conservative methods that could effectively reduce pollution and also recycling and reusing material, thus effectively preventing wastes 4. Increase in the general surface area of the article 5. Improvement in the strength of the material without considerable increase in the weight 6. Materials that use less raw materials and lesser electricity during manufacture 7. Changes to the electrical conductivity, color and opaqucity of the materials 8. Products that are used become less self-cleansing can be used 9. there would be a reduced need to have chemicals that would retard flames and fires 10. Components that are used in construction of automobiles can become more resistant to wear and tear, erosion and fatigue 11. Nanoscale catalysts can effectively help to reduce pollution 12. using the nanoscale catalysts, raw materials would be utilized more efficiently and reduced amounts of wastes would be generated (EPA, 2007) Advantages of Nanotechnology with reference to fire protection Body Nanotechnology involves the use small particles of materials or manipulating them in such a way that their properties would be enhanced, with potential application on a larger scale especially for construction purposes. Nanotechnology involves creating these modifications at ten to the power of -9 of a meter or the nanometer level. It is a new science with more recent applications and can be considered to be an extension of work that has been occurring on a microscopic level (micrometer). Processes and products with concrete, steel, glass, and composites are using nanotechnology. The concrete that would be used can be manipulated easily and is more durable, stronger and environmentally-friendly. Steel and glass can become tougher. Once, these materials are stronger, durable, and tougher, and their manipulation is improved, the impact on the environment would also be positive as the materials are more efficient. Not only is the process of manufacture improved by using nanotechnology, but also during actual fabrication or manipulation at the construction site (Mann, 2006). Most of the nanotechnology applications have been held back due to the limitations in costs. Nanotechnology is quite expensive for the modern world to incorporate due to the infancy of technology. With costs of using the same very high and rather very limited applications, many people prefer ignoring nanotechnology, resulting in isolation. Researchers feel that within the next five years, there could be significant use of nanotechnology in the field of constructions and others, such that application of the same would not be so exorbitant. Nanotechnology at the moment requires strong funding for research and motivation. The government needs to take an active role in the same with interest in improving the current environmental degradation. Besides, researchers and the industry need to collaborate more strongly. There should be a strong thirst for innovation such that nanotechnology should be applied with greater force (Mann, 2006). With the introduction of any kind of new technology, importance should be given to the life-cycle of the products, toxicity of the product and exposure that could be occurring to both humans and others in the environment. With relation to the life-cycle several factors need to be taken into consideration including design, level of production, application of the product, disposal, disintegration in the environment, etc. At the users end, a checklist need to be utilized that would ensure that enough of prevention is taking place in protecting the environment and human life. Some of the queries that can form a part of this checklist include:- ? Steps need to be taken to reduce the unintended consequences of the life-cycle of the product ? Real-time application of the products that can prevent pollution ? Barriers that are present for adopting nanotechnology in the modern world ? Methods of overcoming these barriers ? Areas of nanotechnology in which further research needs to be performed ? Manner in which the beneficial properties of nanotechnology can be used to create innovative products that can reduce pollution ? Role the regulatory bodies, courts and the government can perform (EPA, 2007) Today, the walls of homes and offices have huge amounts of lead in the paints and often this can be toxic during use or disposal. Nanotechnology and nanoengineering can help improve the composition of these materials such that they are less toxic to human health and the environment. Today, the impact of floods and erosion beaches are very critical considering the ill-effects of global warming. By changing the way natural materials function at the nanoscale, their environmental-friendliness can be improved (EPA, 2007). Not only would nanotechnology help in reducing the carbon dioxide levels by changing how the material works at the nanoscale, but also help the way in which a building is using energy (EPA, 2007). The same modification to cement can effectively help in fire protection as spray-on coats. The present cements that are being used are very brittle and need polymers to make them more adhesive. With modifications at the nanoscale to cement, they are stronger, more durable and can tolerate high temperatures when present in coats. Effectively carbon nanotubes (CNT’s) are mixed with cement material to mimic something similar to composites with high strength. Another option instead of using CNT’s is polypropylene which is a cheaper option and can improve fire protection (Mann, 2006). Using nanotechnology, better solar cells can be manufactured that are more efficient and cheaper. Besides, nanotechnology can help in heat recovery and also in treatment of water and air at the building. However, these technologies are not current and scientists are suggesting that they can be used, although we have already woken up to the dawn of the future (EPA, 2007). The self-assembly of buildings can be improved using nanotechnology. Molecules can be designed into complementary shapes such that they produce only minimum energy, which effectively helps in fire prevetion (Mann, 2006). Nanotechnology also plays an important role in fire hazard management and prevention. Today having a nanocomposite as one of the materials present in the flame retardant has been considered an advantage. Cross linked systems that provide polyureas and polyurethane foams seem effective in controlling fires. Another new tool that has been developed to combat flames is confocal microscopy (used in chemical analysis and material testing by collecting the light that is in focus and excluding light out of focus) (Leica, 2010). Previously, all the flame retardant systems had certain toxic components that could harm human life and have a negative effect on the environment. However, flexible and rigid polyurethane structures have been used in a number of applications such as furniture, mattresses, carpets, cars, aircrafts, etc. By altering them at the nanoscale, their resistance to fire can be improved. Previously, the open cell structures of the foams prevented stability during fire fighting. Even additives that increase the foam stability would have a negative effect on the environment. These additives include halogens and phosphorus based compounds that have a negative effect over human health. As most of these substances are volatile, during fire fighting, the high temperature would cause evaporation of these materials causing more damage to the environment (EPA, 2007). Nanotechnology can also be used to develop nano-electromechanical systems and circuitry that would connect detectors at various places in the buildings. The nano-devices would be effectively embedded into surfaces and would be able to detect fire easily (Mann, 2006). Another application of nanotechnology for fire protection is in nanoclays that can help to lower the rate at which plastics burn as it can increase the char forming abilities and prevents plastics from melting and dripping. When used along with other flame retardants, there is more effective fire retardation (EPA, 2007). With regards to fire protection specifically certain queries need to be answered in the checklist:- ? Extracting of raw materials during processing should not be damaging to the environment ? Emission of nanomaterial to the environment ? Reaction or additives to polymers ? Nanomaterials properties during use ? Exposure of nanomaterials to the industrial workers during manufacture ? Reaction of nanomaterials to light, heat, dust, etc ? Ability to recycle the nanomaterials ? Protection of workers during manufacture ? Nanomaterials during combustion and burning ? Ability to transport the nanomaterial ? Effects of exposing the user to nanomaterial A company by name GreenShield FR has developed a nanomaterial treatment for several groups of materials including polyester so that the material can become fire resistant as well as provide protection from water and staining. There are three sets of coat which are applied of the nanomaterial onto the surface. The first layer helps the nanomaterial to adhere to the parent material. The second layer offers repellency and self-cleansing action, and the third layer offers fire-resistance. At the end, the entire material is non-flammable. When these materials degrade they do not release any kind of toxic material into the environment. Nanoclays on the other hand help to lower the amount of energy that is liberated during fire. The nanoclays prevent the materials from bursting and disintegrating and further adding to the fire that has been activated. Nanoclays ensures that the materials burn slowly and at a lower temperature and can work along with several fire retardants (Betts, 2008). Conclusion Nanotechnology is offering strong promises to the field of fire protection, although very little is being utilized today due to the exorbitant costs of nanomaterials. However, these materials are not only more effective and safer, but also more environmentally-friendly. Within the next five years, with greater innovations and understanding of nanotechnology it would be easier to use this technology. Using nanotechnology, materials not only become fire-resistant but also stronger, durable and better self-cleansing. Using nanotechnology, fire cannot only be prevented and retarded, but also monitored and detected using nano-electromechanical detectors. The future for nanotechnology looks good, but researchers and academic organizations should continue with their search to make this technology more affordable and effective. References Betts K. S.
